French company Lexibook have brought out what seems to be its own netbook for kids, according to Lilputing. It is actually being marketed as a laptop, but with a small 8-inch, 800 x 400 pixel screen screen and very low specs (400 MHz Samsung processor, 64 MB RAM, 2GB hard drive, 2 USB 1.1 ports), it closely resembles the definition of a netbook (moreso than some of the newer netbook models, one might argue). Battery life is about 3 hours and the model is loaded with Windows CE 5.0.
There isn’t much a system like this can handle nowadays, but for a kid who wants to do the basics kids do – such as checking emails, watching a few videos, playing some web-based games – it should be enough. The price tag, on the other hand, is less than cute, with retail price an expensive €299.00 (US$380), which is appallingly high when you could probably get a much better loaded netbook for lower price. However, the cutesy design and specific marketing towards kids is likely to sway some less price savvy buyers into grabbing one for a Christmas gift.
