The “Will they or won’t they?” debacle surrounding Coby Electronics’ apparent entrance into the netbook market has now been debunked officially by the company itself. This comes after a fiasco last week that saw the story of $99.95 netbooks by Coby hit most sites that cover netbook following the publication of this article by Arkansas IndyMedia. A sub-$100 netbook sounded like a great thing for the netbook market, almost too good to be true.
And too good to be true it was. Just a day after the story broke, the doubts began, with PR representatives at Coby saying that the story was not “initiated, condoned, or approved by Coby Electronics.” While this didn’t decisively confirm the whole thing was a hoax, an official statement from the company posted by SlashGear does. The statement, particularly the following part of it, couldn’t be any clearer:
“Coby Electronics Corporation is not currently producing a PC nor is one headed to market at any price under the company’s name.”
The End.
