Earlier this month we posted a story about a new offering by EMTEC that was planned with pretty interesting specs and the promise of a sub-$400 price tag.
Now we know more on this netbook that is called the Gdium Liberty 1000 and instead of Windows is powered by a version of Linux called Madriva. The most unique feature isn’t that though but the undockable G-Key, a personal and bootable USB key. This is really useful if you use more than one computer and need to transfer files as you could just take it out of the Gdium and stick it into your PC’s USB drive.
The 10-inch screen has 1024 x 600 pixels and uses a 900MHz 64bit ST Microelectronics CPU instead of the often predictable Intel Atom processor. Other specs include 512MB of RAM, the 16GB G-Key just mentioned, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, a webcam, and a microphone. This is definitely an attempt to stray from the norm of netbook releases that just tend to get a passing glance, and has a unique extended keyboard too.
Pricing will be “under $400″, which could easily mean $399.99, and the Gdium will ship with Firefox, Open Office, Thunderbird, and IM software already loaded in.
