Freescale to offer $200 netbooks that don’t suck?

Freescale could soon make an impact in the netbook scene if everything goes according to their plan. The company is in a rush to get it’s netbooks on shelves before summer and with what they plan to offer, could definitely make a splash.

Not only do they plan to price the netbooks at a bargain basement price of $200 by using their own chips instead of Intel’s Atom or similar, their netbooks could have up to 8 hours of battery life and be significantly slimmer than current designs out there.

Freescale’s own i.MX515 processor chip could appeal to people who want more battery life than the Atom can hold, as it is based off ARM’s 1GHz CPU. This chip includes embedded 3G connectivity and the much touted high performance multimedia. Now imagine this in a stylish $200 netbook and you start to see the potential of Freescale’s new range — if all is as good as it seems.

The company is trying to get its netbooks in production by the middle of this year so that they can be on sale by the 2009 holiday season.
