What’s that, it isn’t a netbook? Given the growing trend in screen sizes among netbooks, you might be forgiven into thinking otherwise but the $1,999 price does put it far out of netbook range.

However, there are signs already that Dell is preparing the Adamo 9, and with the “13″ in Adamo 13 meaning 13-inches, you can safely bet on the Adamo 9 being a 9-inch luxury netbook.

SlashGear reports that after VIA announced its 1080p-capable Surfboard C855 reference design today, Dell might be tempted to use this in the Adamo 9. The Surfboard C855 is based on a VIA C7-M processor running at 1.6GHz coupled with a Chrome9 graphics chipset capable of 1080p, MPEG-2/4, VC-1, and WMV9 decoding.

With regular Dell netbooks — the Inspiron Mini range — using the Intel Atom processors, the Adamo using the Surfboard C855 could help differentiate and market the Adamo as something more luxury and justify what will no doubt be a hefty price tag by netbook standards.

But also announced today was the company’s third netbook, the 10-inch Dell Mini 10 that slots in perfectly between the 8.9-inch Dell Mini 9 and the 12.1-inch Dell Mini 12.

The Mini 10 is just one of many 10-inch netbooks to join the fray lately, but has some impressive features that are make it stand out. The 10-inch screen produces an impressive “edge to edge” 720p (1280×720) resolution (with 16:9 aspect ratio for HD content!), putting it almost in league with fully sized notebooks.

A built-in TV tuner is another cool addition, while integrated 3G WWAN/GPS and multitouch support are also included. To match the screen, the keyboard will also be “edge to edge”, fully utilizing the space.

The only other thing we know so far is that it will use an 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor, but how much RAM and hard disk space it will offer remains a mystery, as does pricing and availability. Photos are slowly starting to appear, and Pocket-lint.co.uk has a small gallery worth checking out.

The 2GB RAM option costs $75, while the 64GB SSD will set you back $150.

Joanna Stern at LAPTOP Magazine has written two separate summaries of the first 12-inch mini-notebook ever (blog review, official review) and weighed up the pros and cons.

The first positive is what you see when you lay eyes on this VERY appealing model – the sleek and slim design with the glossy 12.1-inch screen. The battery life is also said to be excellent, with each charge of the six-cell battery lasting more than five hours. The keyboard is also easy to navigate and almost full sized, although as I mentioned briefly on Friday, there are many of us wondering exactly what the heck a netbook is anymore and if they shouldn’t just all be generically named subnotebooks now that new releases are reaching 12-inches in screen size.

The major negative with the Inspiron Mini 12 is reportedly very sluggish performance under Windows Vista. Vista is a hog even on many higher spec PCs, so on this model with a 1.6-GHz Intel Atom Z530 and 1GB of RAM, it leads to quite a wait. Joanna wrote, “it took over 2 minutes to get the the Vista desktop and over 4 minutes before all of the preinstalled programs, including the Dell Dock, loaded“, but also thinks that with some tweaking and removing some of the preinstalled software, it might speed up. The hard drive is also slow to perform, so for those demanding faster performance, this may not be the ideal model (at least not with Vista installed).

At a recommend retail price of $654, this is pretty pricey and the model doesn’t seem powerful enough to run Vista efficiently. The good news is that Dell will start offering the Inspiron Mini 12 with Windows XP or its customized Ubuntu Linux operating system from next month, which may turn it into a better performing model and one that lives up to its sweet look.

The catch? You’ll need to commit to a two-year mobile broadband contract. The low cost will come courtesy of a subsidy identical to the one you already get with your cell phone.”

The article goes on to cite a Wall Street Journal story that indicates that Hewlett Packard is already talking to carriers about the arrangement, and that Dell and Asus are likely to follow. If netbook prices drop into double figures as part of packages like this, this could make netbooks more enticing for many in the United States, but it would still be a way behind some European countries. For example, here in the UK, you can get a netbook free if you sign up for contract mobile deals with some major retailers.
